6 Facts About Flywheel (please read this before contacting us for a show/event)
- We are not a nightclub or a bar, but a volunteer-run not-for-profit arts space. This means that we can only host shows if we have volunteers to staff them - an open date on our calendar does not guarantee that we can do a show that night.
- All shows are all ages and cost $12 or less. We do not give bands guarantees, so please don't ask. Since we do not profit on shows, we can not take financial risks. We do generously give bands money from the door, and our standard arrangement is 65% of the door money going directly to bands.
- The space is alcohol/drug/jerk free - this also means you can't drink or smoke weed out back or in our neighbors yard. If you want to "party down", don't play here. We depend on our neighbors & the surrounding community to stay open. We don't want to get shut down over someone's dumb antics.
- We cannot guarantee that your audience will be huge. Flywheel is a "destination venue", which means that people usually pick which shows they want to go to. We very rarely get "walk ins". We are not within walking distance of a "hip, cool, section " of the area. We will do everything possible, by way of promotion to get people here, but there may be very few people at the show.
- We get several hundred booking requests every month. With only so many volunteers & a limit on how many events each of us is allowed to book per month, this means that we can't book everyone who writes to us. Last-minute shows generally don't go over very well here, due to the amount of time we need to promote & publicize our shows - please try to give us at least a month and a half's notice before the date you're looking to play. Additionally, we're all volunteers with limited time doing this because we care about supporting the arts in our area, but this means that sometimes it can take awhile to respond to every request we get. Be patient & if we have to pass on your event, it's nothing personal. Also, one email is sufficient - please don't "check back" repeatedly about the same date if you haven't heard from us yet.
- Are you in a local band looking to play a show at Flywheel? One of the quickest and easiest ways to get a show at Flywheel is to become a volunteer! In exchange for a minimal time commitment (around three hours a month) helping to promote and sustain Flywheel through volunteering, you can set up shows at the space, without having to rely on someone else to make it happen! It's putting the DIY values of Flywheel into practice - anyone can make something happen at Flywheel with a little energy and motivation. We want to help out the local art and music scene as much as we can by hosting shows, but we need volunteers in order to make that happen, so become a volunteer and everybody wins! We have a New Member Open House on the last Monday of every month, or you can contact our volunteer coordinator for more information on getting involved.
